What is a background check? What is a background check, REALLY? Well, one thing you can say for sure, when someone does a background check for you, it is almost always done for the benefit of the one asking for the background check because they are not quite so sure about you or how reliable you might be. Before you cry out your eyes, bawling about how no one trusts anyone in this cruel world and how your pretty face might be seen as untrustworthy well, you should know that background checks are routine; everyone gets a background check done on them sooner or later. Chances are you are not that special or whatever. And just so you know, background checks are oftentimes done without the knowledge of the person in question, though some jurisdictions will require your consent; even then there is no guarantee one will not be done anyway. Background checks are conducted by all sorts of bureaus, agencies, offices, companies, and even criminal enterprises. But before we get too far, or too paranoid, we should ask the first question again and this time, we will actually give it a straight answer. So then again, what is a background check?
What is a background check is the same as asking the essential official records of a person for review. The sources of these records may come from the schools the persons has attended, the former employers of that person, his banks, anywhere and everywhere that can give records that give you an idea about a part of the life of that person.
What is a background check used for? Background checks are used for a wide variety of reasons; though the underlying reason is almost always to make sure people are who they say, do what they say they can do, and are not hiding anything important, like a history of violent crime, for example.
A background check is often required before employment in several professions, especially those requiring high security clearance and those that require high standards of trustworthiness. Employers might even request background checks if only to reduce their liability in case of workplace related crime or accidents, as stringent screening removes some of the culpability of employers in case of such things happening. Credit card, insurance, lending, and banking institutions may issue background checks on plan applicants to ensure that they are not unacceptable risks for the company and will unlikely default on their dues. Various institutions will often issue background checks to see if the academic history of a person is exactly what it seems to be on a resume or CV. Background checks are also used to verify identity, to make sure a person is exactly who they say they are; on the flip side however, background checks can be used by criminal elements to steal identities for their own illegal purposes.
The majority of background checks are now done by private firms for other companies, in the United States. However, government agencies and offices, with the police in particular, were once the bodies that know what is a background check. Other kinds of organizations also do background checks. It has been noted that the smaller an organization is, the more likely it is to do in-house background checks.
So essentially, what is a background check but a tool to keep people honest? A tool we will all surely encounter as the world becomes more and more crowded with characters, angelic and unsavory alike.
